The objectives of this mission included the deployment of Tracking and Data Relay Satellite-B, and the flying of the Spartan-Halley's Comet experiment. The mission also included the flying of the Teacher in Space Project. An explosion of the Challenger space craft one minute and 13 seconds after liftoff claimed the lives of all seven crew members.
