Skylab, the United States' first space station, was built from the upper stage of a Saturn V rocket
modified to be a science laboratory. Skylab launched in May of 1973. Over one year, it hosted three
crews for stays of one to three months. Their experience helped us understand more about the physical, psychological, and operational challenges of long-duration spaceflight.
