Capt. Eddie Rickenbacker was the charismatic commander of the 94th Aero Squadron and was America’s highest scoring ace of World War I. The 94th Aero Squadron, who flew the Nieuport 28 and later the SPAD XIII, was known as the “Hat in the Ring Squadron,” the name inspired by their insignia, Uncle Sam's hat being tossed into a ring, symbolizing America's entry into the fight.
Rickenbacker ended the war as America’s “ace of aces” with a total of 26 victories to his name.
