The Heading Indicator or direction indicator gives the pilot the direction the aircraft is heading towards. In most small aircraft, the heading is established by the magnetic compass, but that can suffer from several errors, including the one created by the downward slope of the Earth's magnetic field which is seen when an aircraft does a bank turn or when accelerating or decelerating.
